OUR EXPERTISE in pat testing

At JK Services we regularly complete PAT testing in Cork City & County for our clients, to ensure the safety of both employees and customer, and to also meet the legal requirement for businesses. Portable appliance testing—more commonly known as PAT testing—is the necessary process of routinely checking portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It reduces the risks of electrical issues, by increasing the likelihood that any problems will be discovered before they can cause any harm.

As the name suggests, this applies to portable appliances, which covers a large selection of electrical goods. As a general rule, anything that can be easily moved around, such as a kettle, or vacuum cleaner, is classed as a portable appliance. PAT testing electrical equipment is regulated by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 in Ireland, and is now a requirement under law. The responsibility to ensure PAT electrical testing requirements are met falls solely on the employer.

What are the Benefits of PAT Testing?

Improves Lifetime Asset Value

When a fault occurs with your appliance it is not just inconvenient, it can also cause damage to the appliance itself. With regular testing, it is much easier to catch problems earlier on, so appliances can stay healthy for much longer, increasing their lifetime value as an asset to your company.

Increase Safety

It should go without saying that a faulty electrical appliance is a safety hazard. Granted, most of the time, a faulty appliance just won’t work correctly—or won’t work at all. But with any electrical appliance, there is a risk of harm to those using it and testing can prevent that. Our electrical services team can help with testing.

Reduce Liability

Your primary concern will be the welfare of your employees and customers, but as a business, you do have additional things to worry about. A reduced risk of injury from faulty appliances means reduced liability. Remember, the employer is always responsible for their faulty equipment.

PAT Testing

Better Productivity

Regular testing in your Cork business will help to prevent appliances from developing faults unnoticed, which in turn reduces the chances that they will misbehave. This means the people using the appliance don’t have to wrestle with it breaking down from time to time or not working correctly at all.

Frequency of PAT Testing

How often an appliance needs to be tested is mostly dependent on the type of appliance it is, and how frequently it is used. As an example, a kettle in a hotel room qualifies as a portable appliance but does not need to be tested as regularly as a drill. That being said, a drill that gets used once every so often does not need testing as frequently as a drill that is used every day. To that end, there is no single clear interval we can give, as every situation is different.

At JKS, we can work with you to establish an interval that is right for your appliances. We can also instruct you on how to recognise the warning signs of a potential electrical problem from visual inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the process by which portable electrical appliances are inspected for problems and potential future issues by a qualified tester. Testing is necessary for many reasons, with the health and safety of those around the appliances being the main.

While you do need to be adequately trained to be a PAT tester, that does not necessarily mean you need to be a qualified electrician. You can become certified by taking an appropriate course. It would certainly benefit you to have electrical knowledge beforehand.

There is no single interval that applies to all circumstances. Appliances that are used will often require more frequent PAT testing than others, and the type of appliance can affect the interval as well. As a rule of thumb, this interval will typically fall between one and four years.

PAT testing is important because, legally, a business is responsible for its appliances. Faulty electrical appliances can cause inconvenience, reduction in productivity, or can cause injury in more severe cases. Tests not only dramatically reduces the chances of an appliance failing, but it also covers your business in the event that a failure does occur.

A complete PAT test (as opposed to a visual inspection) will rarely take more than one hour. It is often much less than that for smaller and simpler portable appliances.

As per the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation’s S.I NO.299 of 2007, it is a legal requirement for businesses to have their electrical appliances PAT tested at appropriate intervals, with the responsibility falling solely on them to ensure that this happens.

The difference between class 1 and class 2 appliances is the level of protection the end user has from electricity. Class 1 appliances will have a single layer of protection, whereas class 2 will have more. An example of a class 1 appliance might be a metal toaster, whereas a class 2 appliance could be a power tool with plastic casing.

Though PAT testing is not explicitly required of landlords, they do have a legal obligation to keep their property safe for its tenants. It is a useful tool in ensuring this goal is achieved.
